How do you become a more effective student? The answer is improving your study skills. Study study skills are critical for success in school, college and university. As continuous learning is a skill that is highly valued by employers, and with more jobs requiring flexibility, it not only important to be able to learn, but knowing ‘how’ you learn is vital. This is the purpose of Study Skills.

An ability to learn and flexible learning is common to many high level professions. Because of globalization, it is important that professionals learn new things continuously. Doctors, teachers and engineers are required to synthesize and analyze high levels of information. As these fields are highly innovative and new innovations keep coming even more frequently than in the past, it is important to have the flexibility to adapt. So, everybody, including students, need to know ‘how to learn’ or, in other words, to gain study skills.

Study skills help learners to learn very quickly and effectively using learning techniques. Effective study skills deal with processing new information, retaining knowledge and applying this knowledge effectively.

A key part of study skills is ‘purposeful learning’. Directed, or purposeful learning, requires an ability to learn new thing rapidly, to focus on key pieces of information, and to recall information for long periods of time. Confidence is gained by being aware of what one has learnt, and knowing when and how to apply this knowledge.  In this fashion, this is where study skills contribute significantly. Having said this, knowledge of study skills alone is not enough - because individuals have to use these skills in the process of work and study.

Study Skills techniques are various and many. For instance, there are a lot of easy to apply study skills available on the internet. There are 4 major areas of study skills. They are as follows:

•    Reading skills
•    Listening skills
•    Memorization or retention skills
•    Recall or application skills

Reading is the most important part of gathering knowledge and skills. We learn most subjects through reading. In study skills, experts suggest some effective reading strategies. One of the effective reading skills is SQ3R technique.
Here,

•    S stands for Survey
•    Q stands for questioning
•    3R stands for Read, Recite & Review

So, to read effectively, you need to look at the overviews, headings and summaries to survey the document. Next, you need to ask questions about the material you are reading. What does this mean? Why is the author writing that? After that, you need to read thoroughly and review the material frequently. A frequent review of the materials will commit them to your memory for longer period of time. Evidently, it is very important for the effective memorization of materials. You won’t find any study skills that do not speak about frequent review of study materials.

If a student or professional follows these steps, he or she will surely gain success in his or her respective field – and will be well prepared for a great future in work or study!
